Abstract. A 2 nm Al2O3 coating keeps 91% of capacity after 500 cycles, against 78% for uncoated cells. We trace the gap to slower surface reconstruction and report rate tests at 2C for both.
Nickel-rich layered oxides raise energy density but lose capacity as their surfaces react with the electrolyte. Coatings a few nanometres thick slow this reaction without blocking lithium transport.
Cathode powders were coated in a flow reactor with alternating precursor pulses at 150 °C, then cycled 500 times at 25 °C and 45 °C between 2.8 and 4.3 V.
